Behind Closed Doors
Dear friend, this week, the church gives us the Gospel of John chapter 20: 19 - 21 to reflect upon. The narrative starts with the phrase ‘the doors were closed in the room, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews’. Last week we pondered the Good News of the empty tomb, and here we find the apostles behind closed doors. Jesus has risen but the disciples are fearful.
We also can receive the good news of Easter, and still remain fearful. Here on the retreat, many participants shared on the disbelief of the disciples, on receiving the news of the resurrection. We discussed- ‘what is it about us that we are slow to internalize Jesus’ victory over the way of the world?’. We can remain trapped in fear, despite the good news of Easter.
This fear may stem from various sources, such as the fear of failure. When considering starting a new venture, this fear of failure can immobilize us, trapping us behind closed doors. Alternatively, it might arise from a fear of shame, perhaps due to past events that haunt us, hindering our progress in new endeavors. There's also the apprehension of persecution, where we anticipate criticism or hostility from others based on our aspirations, identities, or past actions. Additionally, the fear may be rooted in grief, as the loss of a loved one can leave us secluded and hesitant to embrace new opportunities.
Despite these fears and uncertainties, it's essential to recognize that growth often requires stepping outside of our comfort zones. While it's natural to feel apprehensive, dwelling in fear can prevent us from experiencing the richness of life and the potential for positive change. By acknowledging and confronting these fears, we can begin to unlock the doors that confine us, allowing us to embrace new possibilities with courage and resilience. Each step forward, no matter how small, brings us closer to healing, growth, and the fulfillment of our aspirations.
As followers of the Risen Christ we counter these fears through prayer and the reading and interpretation of scripture in our lives. Prayer has the capacity to endow us with grace, giving us the courage to confront our fears. We have such a wide variety of prayer types from Liturgical and traditional devotions to Christian Meditation and Charismatic. I recommend building a toolbox of prayer types to suit different emotional and psychological situations. In whatever context you find yourself you go to God in prayer from your toolbox. It is also a good practice to develop a daily prayer routine.
One prayer that is very effective is the reading, studying and interpretation of scripture, particularly the New Testament. Here we find a treasure trove of motivation, consolation and insights to empower us to open the closed doors in our lives and to step forward into the cool air of progress.
Abba, through our Lord the Risen Christ, give me the grace to unlock the closed doors of my life, so I can step out into the open air of progress.
