Creating our own Sacred Space
Bill staggered to the fence gate and leaned on it, the alcohol in his blood distorting reality. The characteristic sound of the metal gate travelled to Eva who was in the back kitchen helping her mother prepare the evening meal. She froze, heart racing. She dried her hands on the kitchen cloth, then hurried to the bedroom. She crouched down and pulled her knees up to her chest. She closed her eyes and started to pray …. ‘Hail Mary full of Grace…’ She could feel Mary’s presence arriving and with her, confidence and strength coming over her. This was her sacred space.
Whether it's a corner in our home, a room, or an outdoor area, a sacred space can be deeply personal and rewarding. These spaces, whether physical or mental, offer refuge and solace, allowing us to reconnect with our inner selves and foster a sense of well-being. It can be used for prayer, Christian meditation, Bible Study, creative activities, or simply a place to escape.
Sacred spaces go beyond traditional religious contexts; they are personal havens that hold emotional and spiritual significance. Equally important are mental spaces, where one cultivates mindfulness and introspection. Sacred spaces provide an environment conducive to prayer, allowing us to connect with God and delve into our thoughts, feelings, and aspirations.
Research consistently shows that the environment plays a significant role in mental and emotional well-being. Sacred spaces, whether at home or in nature, contribute to stress reduction, improved mood, and increased resilience. Regularly engaging with these spaces promotes a positive mental state and a more balanced emotional well-being.
As we navigate the challenges of the modern world, let us prioritize the cultivation of these sacred spaces to promote prayer and with it inner peace, creativity, connection, and overall mental and emotional well-being. Find a small space, remove unnecessary items and clutter from the space. A clean and organized environment provides a sense of calm and allows for a more focused and intentional experience.
Select items that hold personal significance or convey the purpose of the space. This might include meaningful pictures, symbols, prayer books, a rosary or objects that resonate with your values and beliefs. Ensure the space is comfortable and inviting. Consider incorporating soft furnishings such as cushions, blankets, or a comfortable chair. The goal is to make the space welcoming and conducive to prayer.
It was dusk on the little island off Venezuela. The streetlights came on. Frogs and cicadas started the symphony. Candle flies began to appear. Bill dropped his body on the chair in the gallery. Then began to shout E V A – E V A. Eva lifted herself up and went out trembling into the gallery, but with a confidence she could handle it. ‘Take off my shoes.’ ‘What did your mother cook?’ Eva bent down to unlace his shoes. She knew it was going to be a long tumultuous evening into night. But she also knew that Mother Mary was there.
