Dwell in its Shade
Many years ago, at a spiritual retreat, our retreat master asked us to reflect on this week’s Gospel Mark 4: 30, the parable of the mustard seed. A humourous friend of mine shared that only large vultures have come to dwell in the shade of his branches. His comment brought raptures of laughter and it has stayed with me ever since.
Our spiritual master, not dishellved by his answer, suggested that he reflect on the reason for this. Was it that these vultures needed his branches? Was it that his branches were suitable and attractive to vultures? If so why?
Over the years his wry comment has given me much to reflect on. What are they types of birds that have come to dwell in the shade of your branches? What type of tree are you? I believe our type of tree is a reflection of our inner growth and the environment we cultivate around us. Some may attract wrens and robins, bringing joy and cheer, while others might indeed attract vultures, symbolizing a place of refuge for those in dire need.
Our spiritual journey shapes the tree we become, influencing the kinds of souls that seek solace in our presence. Just as the mustard seed grows into a mighty tree, so too do our actions and intentions determine the nature of our branches and the birds they attract. Reflecting on this parable, I am reminded that it is not merely about the types of birds, but about understanding our own growth and the impact we have on the world around us.
As a tree, we choose how we respond to our environment by the way we extend our branches and nurture our roots. While our shape is determined by the type of tree God made us to be, we can choose to grow or remain stunted. Our ambition can be to provide shade and support to those in need, offering a safe haven in times of trouble, or we can be self engrossed with the beauty of our leaves.
Our response can be one of resilience, standing firm in the face of storms and adapting to the changing seasons of life. Just as a tree absorbs sunlight and rain, we can take in both the joys and challenges of life, transforming them into growth and strength. In doing so, we create an environment that reflects our values and character, attracting those who resonate with our spirit. Ultimately, the health and vitality of our tree depend on the care and intention we invest in our spiritual and emotional well-being.
As we reflect on the parable of the mustard seed and the types of birds that dwell in the shade of our branches, let us be mindful of the environment we cultivate and the impact we have on those around us. Take a moment to consider what kind of tree you are becoming and the birds you attract.
Are you providing shelter and solace, or do you need to adjust your growth to better serve your community? Embrace your inner growth with intention and compassion, and strive to create a nurturing and supportive presence for others. Together, let us grow into mighty trees, offering strength, refuge, and hope to all who seek our shade. Your journey of growth and reflection continues—be the tree you wish to be, and let your branches extend wide giving shade.
