Tradition has it that the 3 Wise Men who visited the Infant Jesus came from Bablylon in Persia, 900 miles East of Bethlehem. They were members of a priestly caste who studied Philosophy, Alchemy, Astrology and Nature. They are said to have influenced the Greek philosophers, since Aristotle referred to the Magi as - teachers of philosophy.
Their heavenly observations, at that time, acted as an incentive to set off in the right direction that leads to the Infant Jesus. Informing us that knowledge of truth leads to Christ. Yet, what would make these wise men set off on such an arduous 6 month journey, across deserts, at the risks of bandits, probably as part of a caravan, like in the book, The Alchemist. It is one thing to know of truth, it is quite another to set off on journey to truth. There must also have been some invisible power that transformed into a true North star.
We can draw a parallel to our own lives, we may come across truth (a star) that point to Christ, but do we set off on a journey or only remain as couch potatoes? As we begin this New Year with all its political, crime and natural disaster risks, are we willing to to be adventurous and embark on a journey to a deeper relationship with the Christ?
If we are observant, at the start of the New Year, we too would recognize a true North star, in our lives. This star, partly physical, partly within, points and draws us to a new direction in life. Like the wise men, we are being called to pack our camels, and join a caravan across deserts, following this star.
I too have recognized a star, appearing late last year calling me to leave much of the business we have built during the last 20 years, to embark on an adventurous journey to make a living creating spiritual digital products and converting part of our home into a spiritual retreat centre.
Probably like the wise men you also may be being called to follow a star. What is your star? At times you may have lost sight of the star, along the way, and have had to stop to ask for clearer directions. But rest assured, the star will reappear and you will rejoice exceedingly with great joy, as it leads you to a deeper relationship with Christ. And we all will return with a new direction in life.
