Pope Francis on Wednesday, during his general audience, said that many eating disorders are mostly linked to torments of the psyche and soul. In fact much of our suffering are linked to torments of the psyche and soul. Spiritual disorders affect the innermost centre of a person. Happiness and satisfaction in life for which God created us remain elusive until - as Saint Augustine famously said - ‘My soul can never find rest until in rests in You (God)’.
It is noteworthy that in Luke 5:17 when the cripple was let through the roof… Some men took a man who was not able to move his body to Jesus. He was carried on a bed. They looked for a way to take the man into the house where Jesus was. 19 But they could not find a way to take him in because of so many people. They made a hole in the roof over where Jesus stood. Then they let the bed with the sick man on it down before Jesus…. that Jesus’ first response was not to heal his body but his sins - When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the man, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
It was only after healing him of his sins that Jesus healed his body - He said to the man who could not move his body, “I say to you, get up. Take your bed and go to your home.” 25 At once the sick man got up in front of them. He took his bed and went to his home thanking God. 26 All those who were there were surprised and gave thanks to God, saying, “We have seen very special things today.”
When Jesus would heal someone, he often reminded the person not to go back into sin or simply reminded them that their faith had healed them. Any type of improvement in our physical, emotional or psychological well being, without spiritual healing, is not true healing but a cure. Only when our spirit is in harmony with God can we speaking of healing.
It means when we are seeking healing in mind or body we must include spirit as well. By all means go to the doctor or the psychologist but also to the priest or deacon. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Mt 6:33.
