No one is able to snatch us out of the Father's hand
In this week’s Gospel John10: 27-30 Jesus extends the metaphor of the Good Shepherd and the sheep by speaking about persons, with evil intent, not being able to take his sheep out of his hands. And the reason being that the Father has placed them in his hands and the Father is all powerful.
‘…and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.’
At the time of Jesus, shepherd’s hands were a powerful symbol of authority and protection of his sheep. When Jesus spoke about being held in the Father's hands, He was using a metaphor that conveyed the deep security and care that God provides.
Shepherds are not distant owners; they physically intervene when their sheep are in need. If a lamb is injured, sick, or weak, the shepherd lifts it and carries it. When a sheep becomes separated or trapped in a ravine or bush, he uses his staff—or his bare hands—to rescue it. And when danger approaches, such as a predator, he instinctively scoops up the vulnerable lamb and holds it close, placing himself between the threat and the one he protects. These acts of care are not occasional but instinctive, reflecting a bond of trust and responsibility.
Scripture beautifully captures this relationship. Isaiah 40:11 tells us, ‘He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart,’ portraying God's tender attention, especially toward the weak or endangered. In Luke 15:5, Jesus says, ‘And when he finds [the lost sheep], he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home,’ emphasizing the shepherd’s joy and compassion in rescuing the lost.
The assurance that no one can snatch them from His hand, or the Father’s hand, speaks to the absolute security of those who belong to Him. It is a promise not merely of external protection but of deep, interior belonging—being chosen, known, and preserved by God Himself.
In a world where so much feels uncertain and fragile, this Gospel passage reminds us that our place in God’s heart and hands is firm and irrevocable. We are not loosely held, but tightly embraced by the One who is greater than all.
Friend, perhaps you find yourself facing uncertainty—a medical diagnosis, a financial strain, a broken relationship, or simply the quiet ache of feeling overwhelmed or unseen. In these fragile moments, it can be tempting to wonder if God has let go or if we’ve somehow slipped through His fingers. But Jesus’ words are for us: ‘No one can snatch you out of My hand.’
We are not loosely held; we are tightly, lovingly embraced by Jesus who knows our name, our struggles, our fears. Even when life shakes us, Jesus’ grip remains steady. The same hands that healed, blessed, broke bread, and were nailed to the cross now hold us with unwavering strength and compassion. Let this truth settle in our hearts this week—we are safe, because we are His.
