Out of the abundance of the heart a mouth speaks
I was blessed by presiding at the Ash Wednesday Service for the boys and girls of our parish’s two schools. It was for me a most joyous experience to celebrate the service with 500 boys and girls. Their innocence, spontaneous laughter and exuberance created a Holy Spirit enkindled atmosphere.
Greeting them as they entered and left the church was a highlight of the service, seeing their innocent smiles. The experience caused me to reflect on this week’s Gospel Luke 6:39-45 ‘The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks’
Out of the abundance of innocence of their hearts they spoke and laughed with joy. It is no wonder that Jesus on many occasions related that if we didn’t approach the kingdom with a childlike innocence we would not be able to enter.
Their presence reminded me of the purity and openness that Jesus calls us to embrace. As I watched them receive their ashes some with solemn curiosity, others with bright-eyed wonder I was struck by how naturally they accepted the moment, without pretense or hesitation.
Their unfiltered joy and trust reflected the very essence of faith: a heart unburdened by cynicism, open to grace. In their laughter and their simple yet profound engagement with the sacred, I saw a glimpse of the Kingdom. It was a reminder that holiness is not found in complexity but in the sincere, overflowing love that springs from a heart attuned to God.
Friend, I would like us to approach this Lent as pilgrims journeying back to the innocence of our childhood. Like children, may we embrace this season with open hearts, ready to receive His grace with wonder and trust. Let us fill our hearts with the abundance of Our Lord’s love, through prayer, bible study and participating in the Lenten retreats.
Let us make it a journey of renewal, a chance to rediscover the joy of simple faith, the peace of a heart unburdened, and the beauty of walking hand in hand with our loving Father. May our Lenten pilgrimage lead us to the joy of Easter.
