Spiritual or Religious or Both
Reviewing the history of the use of the word spiritual we discover that it was once a subset of religious. There were those whose religious practices were more contemplative such as monks and certain religious orders. So John of the Cross and Theresa of Avila , both very religious , were considered to be spiritual. They practiced much of their religion in deep contemplative prayer.
Fast forward to today the language has been inverted. Religious is now understood as a subset of spiritual. Many now think that all persons have a spirituality and some practice their spirituality by following a religion and it’s religious practices of rites and rituals.
Recent research has shown that even though many persons no longer consider themselves religious they still entertain deeply held spiritual beliefs and yearning and a deep desire for religious practices that would nurture an interior spiritual life.
