The Disciples kept Silent
I believe the disciples were embarrassed with their behavior, when in this week’s Gospel Mark 9:31-37 Jesus asked them ‘What were you discussing on the way? But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.’ Jesus was telling them about his passion, death and resurrection and they in turn were discussing self centered motives.
Isn’t that so typical of us? Often, instead of listening to another’s concerns, we are busy with our own preoccupations. Our minds are so caught up in personal ambition, pride, and worries that we miss the deeper meaning of messages God is sending. We lose sight of the call to humility, service and trusting in Him, focusing instead on our own desires.
I have often found myself more interested in my own ideas and plans instead of listening to the Holy Spirit as He talks to me through the words of others. This is what, I believe, the Church is getting at with the focus on Synodality, urging us to change our ways to that of listening.
And it is not only in Church matters but also in personal relationships, family, at work and in politics. We are being called to be other focused instead of self focused. It’s about creating space for the Spirit to guide us through others, to truly hear and understand the needs, struggles, and insights of those around us. This shift can lead to deeper connection and transformation, both in our personal lives and in the world around us.
Here on my temporary hilltop I can stop and listen to the waves crashing against the rocks and shore below. But it is also possible that even that nourishing sound can be drowned out by my mental busyness. Over the long weekend I have come to realize that I have to make a conscious effort to pay attention to the sounds of the birds and surf.
Yet, in His gentle manner, Jesus continues to call us to a path of selflessness, teaching that true greatness lies in becoming ‘the last of all and servant of all’ and trusting that our own challenges will be addressed in this way.
