The Church has asked us to reflect on John 15: 1-8. The Gospel passage begins with this phrase, which is laden with meaning - ‘I am the true vine…’. In Psalm 80: 8-13 we read the poetic words ‘You brought a vine out of Egypt…and planted it…’ the Psalmist goes on to use the metaphor of the vine to describe the settling of God’s chosen people in the promised land. I encourge you to read the verses.
Jesus takes up this metaphor and describes himself as the true vine. I believe Jesus is interpreting the chosen people as reaching its fulfillment in His person. He is God’s chosen one. And he goes on to bring all of us into His Body in verse 4 ‘Abide in me as I abide in you’ Through baptism in Christ we are the true chosen people.
This teaching is one of salvation and belonging. We are no longer aliens in a strange land but part of a body of believers united in Christ. This realization gives me a deep sense of belonging and being loved. I am no longer adrift in a hostile world but aboard a barque bound for glory.
I recognize that abiding in Christ and being part of God’s chosen people entails a transformation of my life. Just as branches draw nourishment and sustenance from the vine, so too are we called to draw our strength and identity from our connection with Jesus. This relationship isn't passive but dynamic, requiring us to actively remain in his love, allowing his teachings to shape our thoughts, actions, and relationships.
I have been following a three pronged formula for abiding in Christ and I recommend it to you:
Daily reading and pondering on scripture through bible study
Daily prayer routine using the Divine Office of morning and night prayer along with Christian Meditation
Regularly availing myself of the Eucharist.
I like this three pronged approach coach! Like the Trinity, each segment on its own only makes sense in relationship with the other two. For example, what is Christian about Christian Meditation without a regular immersion in the scriptures and what they reveal to me.
