Transfiguration and Treasure Chests
Catholic theologians have interpreted the Transfiguration of Jesus in various ways throughout history. Some see it as a revelation of Jesus' divine nature, emphasizing his glory and the presence of God. Others view it as a confirmation of Jesus' identity as the Son of God and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. Additionally, theologians have explored its significance in relation to Jesus' impending suffering and death, suggesting that it provided strength and encouragement for Jesus and his disciples as they faced these challenges.
Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) highlighted its significance as a moment of revelation, where Jesus' divinity was made manifest to the disciples, strengthening their faith and preparing them for the challenges ahead. Just as the Transfiguration prepared the disciples for the challenges ahead, I believe Jesus gives us personal transfigurations, when we see Him (Jesus) in a new more meanigful way to our lives.
These transfigurations help us to be spiritually prepared for the trials and tribulations we have to face in our own lives. I vividly remember instances in my life, at a Life in the Spirit Seminar, at our original Marriage Encounter weekend, at a retreat centre overlooking the surging Caribbean sea, when I had deep mystical experiences that have stayed with me to today. In moments of doubt, difficulties and challeges I recall these instances, to give me consolation that Jesus is in charge and all will be well.
They act as a store house of spiritual treasures that I call on from time to time, when I need them. I think of the Virgin Mary pondering in her heart the mystical transfiguration experiences in her own life. I believe that in her various very sorrowful moments, she recalled these treasured memories to bolster her faith in God.
You too, each one of us, has had these mystical transfiguration experiences in life. They are lodged in memory. They are individual treasure chests of consolation to help us through the difficult patches of life. The more we climb the mountain of prayer the more instances we have. I encourage you to open your chests and recall these cherished memories.
