Two Small Copper Coins
In my short time as an ordained deacon and now a pastor of a parish, I have met many women like the poor widow in this week’s Gospel Mark 12: 38-44 ‘a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins’. They quietly go about putting their two small copper coins without attracting attention to themselves.
They serve in the background, cleaning and decorating the church and altar. They kneel silently in the pews, passing their Rosary beads methodically through their fingers, whispering ‘Ave Maria’. They are the first to volunteer and the first to purchase the local church newspaper, and the parish tickets, using their hard saved and sacrificed small copper coins.
They are the bedrock of the parish, embodying the heart of the Gospel with their unassuming devotion and generosity. Their small acts may go unnoticed by many, yet they form the very foundation of our parish community, keeping alive the spirit of humility and service.
They offer their time, skills, and small resources without seeking acknowledgment, often motivated solely by a deep love for God and His Church. Like the poor widow, they remind us of what it truly means to give from the heart—not out of abundance, but from a place of sacrifice and faith. Their faithfulness is a quiet but profound witness to the rest of us, challenging us to consider what we give and how we give it.
In a beautiful twist, these humble women are the true role models in our parish community. Often overlooked in favor of more prominent figures, they quietly demonstrate a faith that is both profound and inspiring. If we take the time to observe their simple acts of service and reflect on their example, we realize that they represent what we, too, should aspire to embody. Emulating them calls us to a deeper form of discipleship.
I believe they have found the proverbial treasure in the field, a spirituality. Through their humble devotion they have found ‘a way’. We too are called to develop a spirituality, a way of life. This is why, we have developed the ‘Benedictine Spirituality for Home and Work Program’. I encourage you to visit at the following link and join, to embark on a journey to a new way of life.
