Walking on Water
Today, when the winds are strong and the sea is getting rough, Jesus comes to us walking on water (Jn 6:16-21). Life is difficult. This week I presided at the funeral of a young man, 17yrs old, killed by gunshot. I feel the pain of his mother, family and friends this morning. Young persons are waking up with no employment, no income. There is anger in the home, leading to quarrel and harsh words. It is getting dark and there seems no hope.
We have rowed three or four miles across the water and here in the darkness Jesus appears to us walking on the water. He is coming towards our boat and we are frightened. But he says to us - ‘It is I. Do not be afraid’. To see Him we must have the eyes of the Spirit. With these eyes, we recognize him in specific persons we meet, they call us to ‘change our ways’. They tell us - take up the Bible and you will see him.
Some of us are called to be Jesus for others. We are the ones walking on water. We are called to guide others to shore. We are called to provide hope; Hope of employment; Hope of a new way of life; Hope of teaching how to make it in this world; Hope of paying for a study course so that another can earn a living. In no time we will all reach the shore.
To know if we are rowing against the wind or walking on water we must pray for guidance. Risen Christ please come to us walking on water. Please guide and bring us to shore. Please help us to recognize you in the Bible (John 6: 16-21) so that we can change our ways. Please give us the courage to play our role.
