While we Teach, we Learn
“While we teach, we learn” was said by Seneca, a Roman philosopher. The best way to understand something is to explain it to someone else.
There has been research done that found that students who are enlisted to tutor others, apply it more effectively. Students who studied in order to teach to another scored higher on tests than those who were learning solely for themselves.
I believe this applies to the faith as well. These past two weeks having to deliver ten homilies has forced me to learn Genesis and St Mark’s and St Matthew’s Gospels as never before. I have a new appreciation of their application to contemporary life.
I suggest this year we take up reading a Gospel with the intention of teaching it to another. I recommend St Mark’s as he writes with a powerful and energetic literary style, full of drama, mystery, and color.
As we begin to read the Gospel with the mindset of teaching it, new ways of thinking evolve, which allows us to go to deeper levels of understanding.
And when it comes to the teaching, why not start with your family. And if willing, I will gladly invite you to podcast with me on all that you have learnt. Let’s do it!
